Easter at St John’s

We have a mixture of traditional and contemporary services, and events to help everyone of all ages and stages to celebrate Easter with us. Please see below for information about what to expect. We look forward to welcoming you to worship with us.

Maundy Thursday  |  6th April 7:30pm

Tenebrae with Foot Washing

Maundy Thursday gets it’s name from the Latin word ‘mandare’, from which we get the word ‘command’. Christians remember Jesus’s command: “Love one another as I have loved you.” It is the day when Christians remember Jesus sharing the Last Supper with his disciples before his death on Good Friday.

The tenebrae service will be a reflective communion service, which will include the stripping of the altar of all decorations.

At the Last Supper Jesus washed the disciples’ feet as an act of humility. Foot washing is a reminder of how Jesus served others and of the kind of service Christians are meant to demonstrate to others.

Good Friday  |  7th April

10am – noon  |  Journey to the Cross for all ages

2-3pm  |  An Hour at the Cross

Good Friday is when Christians commemorate the passion, or suffering, and death on the cross of Jesus Christ. The term ‘Good Friday’ comes from the sense ‘pious, holy’ of the word “good”, such as “the good book” for the Bible.

Between 10am and noon the church will be open, and individuals and families will be able to make their own Journey to the Cross.  At 2pm, there will be a reflective “Hour at the Cross” service.

Easter Sunday  |  9th April

Sunrise Service  |  Old St Mary’s at 6:30am

The first act of worship on Easter Day is nice and early!  Why not start the Easter Day celebrations at sunrise outside Old St Mary’s?

Easter Day Communion Services

9am Traditional  |  10:45am All Age Contemporary

On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead after his crucifixion and burial. We can greet each other and celebrate Easter together!
